Impressions of Raising My Rainbow

My impressions of Raising My Rainbow, to which I was referred by a commenter on this blog.

I showed it to my son, age 7, because his interests are a lot like CJ. Make up, hair and feminine clothing. Yet CJ knows he is male, knows he is a boy, and doesn't have a problem even since he's been allowed to present as he wants without being bullied.

Although I think that this level of obsession with appearance is not cool for either boys or girls (me and my friends didn't sit around playing with makeup when i was 11), my son really liked CJ, and he knows that there is at least one other boy like him in the world. So for that, I thank CJ and his parents.

But other things about the blog bother me. Why is CJ classified as LGBTQ? He hasn't even reaced puberty yet. At age 11 he was chosen marshal for the pride parade. Why is clothing styles being conflated with sexual orientation???? Seems that is a bit oversexualization for a child. In fact, many pride parades have very sexualized parts that it doesn't seem is appropriate for children to be there at all.

And one more thing- CJ doesn't wear skirts. wondering about that. Is skirts the forbidden line that differentiates between a feminine boy and a trans?

So D. drew a picture on the floor (point of pride here: yes, he's allowed to draw on the floor). "Look Mommy, a girl with a penis!" Of course, it looked pretty much the same as all the people he draws- a big round head with a lot of sticks coming out.  So I said "what a funny girl!" hope that was a good response.  This is no different than any other preschool experimenting and wondering about reality, i think and hope but I worry because its an ongoing preoccuppaiton.  Background because this is my first post: My son is 4 and for a few months he's been wanting to wear a makeshift dress, be princess Elsa, and occasionally insist that he has a vagina.   No transtheory bullshit comments will be published.

"when i was a boy i loved dresses"

This happened a while ago, but I've been too busy to blog about it. I went to pick up D. from the previously mentioned birthday party. A group of moms  were chatting at the front door, with the host, a single dad (its a joint custdy arrangement). They were all dressed rather nicely- coincidence? and I felt rather dowdy. The single dad, of course, being male, was under no such pressure and was wearing regular dungarees. See my post below about beauty. But I digress. The point is not the clothes but the conversation. Conversation about clothes. Same thing that I complain about- nothing nice for boys. all boring grays and dark blues. And how ridiculous that even toys like legos come in separate colors for boys and girls. And all of a sudden John, the clearly masculine dad, is saying "when I was a boy I loved dresses...
